On Sunday, October 1, Portland Opera will open the doors of the Hampton Opera Center to the community for a series of free daytime events, featuring an opera chorus rehearsal, close-up access to orchestra instruments, costume shop tours, performances of opera hits by the Opera a la Cart music truck, and a family-friendly performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
“We are thrilled to invite the community into our home,” said General Director, Christopher Mattaliano. “Whether you’re a seasoned opera aficionado or someone who has never seen an opera, we invite you to experience what Portland Opera is all about.”
The Hampton Opera Center, located at the eastern end of the Tilikum Crossing Bridge in southeast Portland, is Portland Opera’s artistic home, with space to accommodate working rehearsals, a costume shop, and administrative offices. “It also makes for a great place to entertain the community,” said Director of External Affairs, Sue Dixon. “We really enjoy bringing the community into our space to share the beauty and magic of opera with them.”
Activities will officially kick off at noon, when children—and adults— are welcome to visit an orchestral instrument “petting zoo”, a space to experiment with many instruments used in the opera orchestra. Visitors will also have the chance to tour the Portland Opera costume shop for a behind-the-scenes look at how opera costumes are made and cared for.
The day will feature two performances from Opera a la Cart, a one-hour performance by Portland Opera to Go (POGO) of The Magic Flute beginning at 1:30pm, and an opportunity to see the renowned Portland Opera Chorus rehearse from 3pm – 5pm.
The Magic Flute is approximately one hour in length, with no intermission, and will be performed in English. It is appropriate for all ages. The opera’s box office will also be open for season ticket subscriptions and renewals.
