Describe your role with Portland Opera

I have been a section double bassist since winning an audition in 2017. I started working with the Portland Opera as a substitute in the 2013 production of Salome and have since been impressed by the high level of musicianship and wonderful camaraderie within the group.

What music/book/movie/show/poem/place/moment is currently inspiring you?

When I am not playing with the opera, I work as a resident physician. Seeing the dedication and sacrifice of the healthcare workers at my hospital fighting this pandemic inspires me every day.

What has your favorite quarantine activity been?

Finding imaginative ways for my wife and I to explore the world together with our little one without being able to travel or go to social activities.

What is your favorite Portland Opera memory?

I had quit my full time job as Associate Principal Double Bass for the Vancouver Symphony in British Columbia in 2012 to pursue a career in medicine. I had not played with a professional orchestra since my last concert there until the first rehearsal in 2013 with Portland Opera. Rehearsing Salome with this wonderful orchestra after over a year hiatus reminded me how important performing music was to me, and this memory continues to remind me of how grateful I am to be a part of this special organization.
