Director of Marketing and Communications

We are seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications for Portland Opera.

Location:  Portland Opera’s Office at The World Trade Center in Portland, Oregon

The role reports to the General Director and is responsible for all aspects of planning, implementing, measuring, and evaluating all marketing, public relations, publications, and brand activities in support of Portland Opera’s mission, productions, and events.

 QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in marketing, sales, and/or public relations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with operatic repertoire and the entertainment industry
  • Working knowledge of Tessitura and database management

Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (37.5 hours per week) Position requires working some evenings and weekends

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the General Director, the Director of Marketing and Communications (DOMC) is a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The DOMC is responsible for all aspects of planning, implementing, measuring, and evaluating all marketing, public relations, publications, and brand activities in support of Portland Opera’s mission, productions, and events.

In partnership with the General Director and senior management team, this position is responsible for developing, executing, and measuring long-term marketing, sales, and communications goals. The management of season campaign programs, day- to-day marketing and communications operational activities, as well as inbound and outbound Opera sales operations, are within the scope of duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic/Long-term

  • Manage and provide leadership to the Marketing & Communications Staff.
  • Prepare department budgets, both expense and revenue.
  • Develop a vision for Portland Opera’s marketing and sales efforts that communicates the character, ideals, and mission of the organization to a wide range of patrons, donors, employees, and other key constituents.
  • Creates and implements audience development marketing plans, including research on target audiences, market trends, and performing arts/non-profit trends using focus groups, surveys, and industry data.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with the development team in order to ensure the coordination and success of all Portland Opera revenue efforts.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive media communications plan that enhances the public awareness of the institution in general and its many activities and productions.
  • Continues professional development by participating in field and industry activities (conferences, professional groups, seminars, courses, ) to ensure that new ideas and methods are introduced to Portland Opera on an ongoing basis.
  • Establishes and maintains company-wide standards for written and graphic communications in printed, verbal, or electronic forms.
  • Builds and cultivates collaborative relationships with industry leaders, board members, media, government and city officials, key business partners, promotional partners, performing arts organizations, and community leaders.

Season Planning and Execution

  • Oversees creation of season timeline and calendars in consultation with team managers and other department directors.
  • Oversees the development and execution of comprehensive marketing, communications, advertising, and promotional plans for Opera subscription campaigns and single ticket sales.
  • Oversees the development of all collateral marketing in support of all Opera productions and public events.
  • Establishes ticket sales goals by production and ticket type during budgeting process and forecasts sales on at least a monthly basis in coordination with team managers.
  • Provides accuracy and regularity of reporting and analytics.
  • Manages the departmental expense budgets and provides insight and data for budget creation/forecasting.
  • Works collaboratively with all departments to provide marketing materials and support for fundraising, education, and community engagement activities.

Ongoing Activities

  • Provides General Director with ongoing measurements, including all pertinent analytics and campaign metrics, in order to ensure appropriate ROI and the effectiveness and efficiency of all marketing campaigns.
  • Oversees ongoing measurements of communications efforts, including analytics for all communications channels and reputation management.
  • Oversees inventory management and dynamic pricing strategies to maximize revenue.
  • Oversees company website, including content, design, maintenance, e-commerce and promotion.
  • Oversees management and coordination of outside consultants and vendors.
  • Negotiates contracts with vendors for advertising, design, printing, ticketing and other support services.
  • Oversees social media campaigns and communications across all channels, including email and e-commerce paths.
  • Oversees a robust patron services team for best practices in welcoming and supporting patron relations.
  • Oversees response to customer/patron complaints and expedite the resolution of customer service issues in coordination with the team.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in marketing, sales, and/or public relations fields.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and guide a team of diverse marketing and sales professionals in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented atmosphere.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with operatic repertoire and the entertainment industry.
  • Solid business computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel skills.
  • Working knowledge of design and printing principles.
  • Working knowledge of Tessitura and database management.
  • Strategic planning experience implementing customer experience surveys.

  • Compensation Structure: This position offers an annual exempt salary wage of $95,000+ dependent on experience, with the below benefits:
