Rigoletto

An enduring masterpiece from 1851.

Powerhouse American baritone Stephen Powell returns to Portland Opera as Rigoletto—the court jester who amuses a philandering and immoral Duke.  A clown in public, but a doting and protective father to his beloved Gilda in private, Rigoletto’s life will change forever when his mockery goes too far, and results in a fateful curse.

Sung in Italian with English translations projected above the stage.

Plot & Program Notes

Rigoletto premiered in 1851 in Venice.  The libretto is based upon Victor Hugo’s 1832 play La roi s’amuse (The King Enjoys Himself), which opened and closed in Paris after the first performance, being deemed “offensive to public morals.” Verdi’s adaptation appeased censors by changing the setting and recasting the king as a duke. This opera went on to become so well loved, the music so familiar, that it can be surprising to learn the difficulty Verdi had in first producing it. Our 2018 production is resplendent with elaborate scenery and lavish costumes. Former resident artist Katrina Galka returns to the Portland stage in the role of Gilda. Prior to her return, she will have sung major roles at Atlanta Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, and Arizona Opera, including singing the lead role of Cunegonde in Arizona Opera’s Candide.
