Press Release: Portland Opera To Go! Goes on Tour with THE ELIXIR OF LOVE

Got kids? A little bit shy of trying opera? Here is your opportunity to introduce opera to your kids and maybe to yourself!

Portland Opera To Go!, the touring division of Portland Opera’s Education and Outreach Program, begins rehearsals this week on a new kid-friendly production of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. Beginning with their first stop on December 14 in Lake Oswego, the touring cast will visit communities all over the region before wrapping up back in Portland on March 11. Before it’s all said and done, children at 47 different schools will be introduced to opera with this sweet and charming comedy.

Clumsy, shy Nemorino is in love. Unfortunately, the object of his affections Adina doesn’t feel the same way. Enter Dr. Dulcamara with his famous “elixir of love.” Desperate, Nemorino quaffs the quack’s dubious brew, but before it has a chance to “work,” the dashing pilot Belcore arrives to sweep Adina off her feet. To prove his love and prevent the impending marriage, Nemorino enlists in the Air Force and uses his signing bonus to buy another dose of the Dr.’s “elixir.” Touched by his gesture, Adina realizes that she has loved Nemorino all along and all ends on a joyful high note (naturally)!

The witty and engaging tale of the young, love-struck Nemorino and the “magic” elixir that will cure his shyness is designed especially for young audiences and comes complete with detailed curriculum plans for teachers that meet the Common Core standards. At many of the tour stops, the talented performers will spend time in classrooms where they’ll get to engage the students in ways that can literally change students’ lives.

Directed and adapted by Kristine McIntyre, the cast includes some of Portland’s finest young singers. The sets are designed by Polly Robbins, with costumes by Cara Carr.
