PORTLAND OPERA TAKES THEIR CELEBRATED 55-VOICE CHORUS TO DOWNTOWN PORTLAND

A SNEAK PEEK INTO A RIGOROUS REHEARSAL PROCESS

THE FIRST CHANCE TO SEE NEWLY APPOINTED CHORUS MASTER
NICHOLAS FOX IN ACTION

Sunday, September 15, 3-5pm | Director Park
(Between SW Taylor & Yamhill and 9th & Park)

(Portland, OR) – Portland Opera invites the public to its fourth annual free Open Chorus Rehearsal at Director Park in downtown Portland on Sunday, September 15 at 3pm, an unfettered sneak peek at how the “exquisite” Portland Opera Chorus (Opera News) prepares for performance. “We aim to make opera available to everyone in Portland, and this is a great opportunity for us to share what we do with the city in a completely casual environment,” says Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano. “Hearing 55 operatic voices together is an almost indescribable, absolutely visceral experience, and what better venue than Director Park for our fellow Portlanders to watch and hear these talented singers up close as they rehearse works by some of the greatest opera composers? It strikes me as an ideal way for anyone who has always been curious about opera to get a taste for this astonishing music.”

This open rehearsal is part of the complex preparations for Portland Opera’s annual Big Night Concert on Saturday, September 21 at Keller Auditorium, a presentation The Oregonian has described as a “lavish program of operatic greatest hits.” Leading this rehearsal is Portland Opera’s newly appointed Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor Nicholas Fox, who will take the chorus through each selection they will sing at thatconcert. “Oftentimes the chorus’s role is to support the story rather than advance it, and the amazing music they make can sometimes take a back seat to show stopping arias. Nonetheless, the chorus’s contributions cannot be understated, so I am thrilled that this open rehearsal provides a showcase for them to really shine,” said Chorus Master Nicholas Fox.

The Portland Opera Chorus is made up of a diverse group of Portlanders, all of whom are members of the American Guild of Musical Artists and many of whom also hold day jobs as diverse as truck driver, teacher, and real estate agent, among many other occupations. “Every member of this chorus is a supremely skilled local musician,” said Director of Artistic Operations Clare Burovac, “and the chorus is a crucial component of this Company. Our new Chorus Master Nicholas Fox will work with them during the rehearsal to perfect their sound and to ensure that the singers’ articulation and tone are unified.  This open rehearsal will give us a glimpse of how the Chorus Master achieves that glorious sound that makes opera such a compelling art form.”
