(Portland, OR) – Portland Opera invites the public to its free Open Chorus Rehearsal at Director Park in downtown Portland (between SW Taylor & Yamhill and 9th & Park) on Sunday, September 28 at 3pm, offering a sneak peek at what the Portland Opera Chorus is preparing for the upcoming year-long celebration of Portland Opera’s 50th anniversary.
“The Open Chorus Rehearsal this year is significant for not just one, but two important anniversaries,” says Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano. “Not only does this concert provide a free preview our 50th anniversary season, it also marks our fifth year presenting this free community event in the heart of city. It is the first of many opportunities throughout the year ahead to celebrate the role that both the community and the chorus play in supporting 49–almost 50–years of great opera productions in Portland.”
The popular end-of-summer event offers Portlanders a look behind the scenes and a preview of what is to come. Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor Nicholas Fox will take the chorus through selections from Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, Georges Bizet’s Carmen, and Show Boat by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. For anyone who has ever been curious about opera, the Open Chorus Rehearsal will provide a dynamic musical preview of what Portland Opera has in store for the community during 2014-15. For more information about the Open Chorus Rehearsal or Portland Opera’s 50th anniversary season, go to www.portlandopera.org.
Three-show ticket packages consisting of Die Fledermaus, Carmen, and Show Boat—the productions to be highlighted during the Open Chorus Rehearsal—are now on sale, with prices starting at just $95 for all three operas. Call the Opera box office at 503-241-1802 (M-F, 9-5) or visit the Portland Opera website for more information.
The Portland Opera Chorus is renowned for its musical and theatrical abilities. National and international reviews of Portland Opera productions consistently mention them as among the best choruses around. Audiences have enjoyed them in a wide variety of guises, costumed in everything from rags to royal raiment. All members of American Guild of Musical Artists, the Portland Opera Chorus can also be found in many different professional guises in businesses and organizations throughout our community.
