PORTLAND OPERA PRESENTS THE ANNUAL
PORTLAND OPERA STUDIO ARTIST PRODUCTION
THE WEST COAST PREMIERE OF
March 30, April 1m, 3, 5, 7 2012 | Newmark Theatre
Philip Glass’ 18th opera, Galileo Galilei, tells the story of the great Italian physicist’s struggle with the Catholic Church and his own faith. Opening at the end of Galileo’s life, as he faces trial for heresy and closing with Galileo as a young boy, watching an opera composed by his father, the chamber opera explores the delicate relationships between science, religion and art.
The opera was commissioned by the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and premiered on June 24, 2002, with a libretto by Mary Zimmerman with Philip Glass and Arnold Weinstein. This production will feature the PORTLAND OPERA STUDIO ARTISTS with all-new sets and costumes by Portland Opera. This is Portland Opera’s first twenty-first century opera, and will be performed in the intimate Newmark Theatre. A new Portland Opera production.
