TO EXPAND THANKS TO NEW FUNDING
Portland, Ore.— Tens of thousands of elementary school students throughout the state will experience the excitement of live opera this year thanks to new funding from a wide array of corporate and foundation funders.
“We are thrilled,” said Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano. “Thanks to the generosity and commitment from these organizations, our Portland Opera To Go education program can return to touring to schools in every corner of the state. These companies and foundations are to be commended for their recognition of the importance of keeping music education in the lives of young people and for their financial commitment to that effort.”

Portland Opera To Go will tour a new 50-minute, English language version of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, directed and adapted by Kristine McIntyre, with sets designed by Polly Robbins and costumes by Cara Carr.
The witty and engaging tale of the young, love-struck Nemorino and the “magic” elixir that will cure his shyness is designed especially for young audiences and comes complete with detailed curriculum plans for teachers that meet the Oregon State Benchmarks. At many of the tour stops, the talented performers will spend time in classrooms where they’ll get to engage the students in ways that can literally change students’ lives.
The tour is set to begin in late January and will hit more than 50 schools in cities, large and small, throughout the state. From the Oregon coast on the west to Prairie City on the east, it is one of the largest arts education tours on the West Coast.
Schools aren’t the only sites on the tour. For the first time, the tour will also include a number of public presentations throughout the state, thanks to a new partnership with McMenamins. Audiences of all ages will be able to enjoy the production at McMenamins Grand Lodge (Forest Grove), the Sand Trap (Gearhart), the Crystal Ballroom (Portland), Hotel Oregon (McMinnville), the Kennedy School (Portland), Old St. Francis School (Bend), Edgefield (Troutdale) and the Olympic Club (Centralia). At these McMenamins venues, audiences will be treated to special concerts of opera’s greatest hits in addition to The Elixir of Love. Three public presentations are also scheduled at the Hampton Opera Center.
