PORTLAND OPERA STUDIO ARTISTS

SPRING RECITAL

Wednesday, May 14, 7:00pm
at the Hampton Opera Center

The flowers are in bloom and the voices are soaring when the Portland Opera Studio Artists present the song cycles of Fernando Obradors, Ottorino Respighi, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Modest Mussorgsky and Aaron Copland.

The third annual recital by the Portland Opera Studio Artists features a variety of song cycles – a group of songs with a unifying theme designed to be performed in sequence – in an exciting evening of vocal chamber music.  The talented young artists will demonstrate the power and beauty of the human voice, in an intimate evening of dramatic pieces. Joining them this year are members of the Portland Opera Orchestra.

The recital features soprano SHARIN APOSTOLOU singing the passionate and lively collection Canciones clásicas españolas by Fernando Obradors. Mezzo-soprano HANNAH SHARENE PENN will be singing Il Tramonto by Ottorino Respighi, a deep and haunting song cycle sung in Italian and accompanied with a string quartet.  Tenor BRENDAN TUOHY will be singing On Wenlock Edge by Ralph Vaughan Williams, a lyrical song cycle evoking the English countryside, also accompanied by a string quartet.  Baritone CHRISTOPHER CLAYTON will be singing Songs and Dances of Death by Modest Mussorgsky, featuring the songs “Lullaby,” “Serenade,” “Trepak” and “Commander-in-Chief.”  Sung in Russian, the cycle offers intense storytelling where Death converses in turn with the mother of a dying child, a young girl, an old peasant, and dying soldiers.  Bass JEFFREY BERUAN will be singing Old American Songs by Aaron Copland.  This cycle, featuring “The Boatmen’s Dance,” “Zion’s Walls,” “At the River” and “Ching-a-ring Chaw,” breaths a fresh spirit into traditional American folk songs in a simple and hymn-like way.  Robert Ainsley will narrate throughout the recital.  Translations will be provided.

In 2005, the Company established the Portland Opera Studio program, designed to train the next generation of opera singers by providing a “bridge” from the conservatory world to the professional stage.  Selected at auditions around the country, young singers fresh from some of the nation’s finest vocal conservatories join the company for a rigorous nine-month training program, during which they are featured in their own Production. Patrons also enjoy their work in supporting roles in Company mainstage productions.
