General Director Christopher Mattaliano has announced additional casting for the company’s upcoming 50th ANNIVERSARY SEASON, which opens on November 7 with the operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss, Jr. “Today’s announcement reflects three important aspects of the company’s artistic profile,” said Mattaliano. “They are the Opera’s ability to attract first-rate performers on a national basis, the growth of our Resident Artists program, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in the upcoming season, and the depth of talent in the Portland area.”

Bass Arthur Woodley returns to Portland Opera as Joe in Show Boat. Woodley’s most recent credits include The Tales of Hoffmann with the Seattle Opera and the world premiere of Champion at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. He has a distinguished history with the role of Porgy in Porgy and Bess, performing it in concert with the San Francisco Symphony and National Symphony and onstage with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Bregenz Festival and the Savonlinna International Festival, among many others.

Tenor Ryan MacPherson, who stole hearts and tickled funny bones as Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance, returns as the would-be playboy Alfred in Die Fledermaus. Baritone Steven Condy also returns to the company, as Dr. Dulcamara in The Elixir of Love. His performance of the same role for Washington National Opera was hailed by The Washington Post, which said, “Look up the term ‘snake-oil salesman’ in the dictionary and you might just find Condy’s picture.” Portland Opera Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master Nicholas Fox will conduct The Elixir of Love.

Current and former Resident Artists are featured in major roles in every 2014/15 season production. Lindsay Ohse is leading lady Magnolia Hawks and Hannah Penn is star-crossed Julie LaVerne in Show Boat. Ian José Ramirez plays the flamboyant auctioneer Sellem in The Rake’s Progress, Alexander Elliott is the swaggering Sgt. Belcore in The Elixir of Love and Matthew Grills portrays doormat-turned-dreamboat Nemorino in the same production. As previously announced, André Chiang is Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus. In addition, Ramirez, Elliott, José Rubio and Jeffrey Beruan all perform solo roles in Carmen.

Susannah Mars makes her Portland Opera debut as Parthy Ann Hawks in Show Boat. Mars is well known throughout the region as a singer and actor whose credits include leading roles in Light in the Piazza (for which she just won a Portland Area Musical Theater Award as Best Actress), Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy and Evita. Angela Niederloh performs Mercédès in Carmen and Baba the Turk, the bearded lady, in The Rake’s Progress. Her recent Portland Opera credits include Dorabella in Cosí fan Tutte and Angelina in Rossini’s Cinderella.
