PORTLAND OPERA STUDIO ARTISTS RECITAL

Mezzo Soprano

CAITLIN MATHES

Tuesday, April 10, 7:00pm | Whitsell Auditorium, Portland Art Museum

Enjoy a superb evening of cabaret and art song when the spotlight shines on mezzo soprano CAITLIN MATHES, accompanied by THOMAS WEBB. This recital is the final in the 2011-12 Portland Opera Studio Artist Recital series that Oregon Arts Watch called, “cause for optimism about classical music’s future,” and Ms. Mathes offers a fascinating, beautiful and thought provoking program.

Ms. Mathes’ recital focuses on pieces banned in Germany during the 1930’s and 40s, called Entartet Musik or “Degenerate Music,” deemed unfit for public consumption on the grounds that it was un-German; influenced by jazz or modernism, or written by Jewish or Marxist composers who dared to oppose the Nazi regime. This program, featuring works from MENDELSSOHN, MAHLER, WEILL and many others, celebrates the breadth and beauty of this work and reminds us of the sad stories of these persecuted artists.

Ms. Mathes has been praised by critics for her “natural acting ability” and “vocal agility” and was recently awarded first place in the 2011 Lotte Lenya Competition. This season, she has appeared with Portland Opera in the Big Night Concert and as Kate Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly. Upcoming roles include Maria Maddalena / A Scribe in Galileo Galilei and Paquette in Candide.

(Portland, Ore) – Portland Opera is pleased to announce Puccini’s goldmine of unforgettable musical moments, Madame Butterfly,  opening February 3 at Keller Auditorium with additional performances on February 5m,9 and 11, 2012.  Tickets, beginning at $20 can be purchased at the Portland Opera box office and Ticketmaster outlets.

Madame Butterfly reflects the opening of Asia to the Western World,” says Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano, “and therefore fits perfectly with this season’s theme of When Our World Changes.  The opera resonates today,” he continues, “because it is a very human work of deeply felt characters.  Cio-Cio-San is one of the richest characters in all of opera, and Butterfly Puccini’s greatest work.”

Portland Opera's Marriage of Figaro Cast Participates In #askavocalist

To celebrate the start of National Opera Week, the entire cast of The Marriage of Figaro will participate in a world-wide Twitter event called #askavocalist during rehearsal tonight.

Twitter followers can ask any question of our cast between 7p-10p.  We will solicit answers from our principle singers, chorus and studio artists - basically whoever is off stage at the time and wants to respond.  Their answers will be posted from Portland Opera's twitter account.  The tweet will attribute whichever singer answers, so followers know who is responding.  For Twitter fans who specifically want to hear from Portland Opera singers, make sure to use the hash tag #askavocalist, as well as tagging @portlandopera.

Follow us on Twitter to join in the fun!

About #askavocalist:

The concept is simple: vocalists (sopranos, mezzos, tenors, baritones, basses, and yes, countertenors and contraltos) make time available to answer questions on Friday, October 28; Twitter followers tweet their burning questions and the musicians answer. It is an opportunity to connect musicians with their audience and share the stories of their musical love and passion, 140 characters at a time. The conversations between fans and musicians can be followed on Twitter by using the hash tag #askavocalist
