PORTLAND OPERA RESIDENT ARTIST RECITAL
BARITONE ALEXANDER ELLIOTTAND PIANIST NICHOLAS FOX

Tuesday, November 5, 2013, 7:00pm | Whitsell Auditorium, Portland Art Museum

(Portland, Ore) — Portland Opera presents baritone ALEXANDER ELLIOTT in his first recital as a Portland Opera Resident Artist on November 5, 2013 at Portland Art Museum’s Whitsell Auditorium. This is the second recital this season in a free series that Oregon Arts Watch called “cause for optimism about classical music’s future.” Mr. Elliott will collaborate with Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master NICHOLAS FOX to present a program that explores the wide range of baritone art song repertoire. Selections will include Stefano Donaudy’s charming late-19th-century songs that emulate the bel canto style and the song cycle “Another Reason Why I Don't Keep a Gun in the House“ by American composer Tom Cipullo, who was called "…one of New York's favorite song composers…" by The New Yorker. The program also includes songs by Maurice Ravel, Ernst Korngold, Samuel Barber, Paul Bowles, and Benjamin Britten.

“This Recital Series is a very important component of the program, both for the singers and for our audience,” said Portland Opera’s Director of Artistic Operations Clare Burovac. “The combination of solo voice and piano presents a distinct set of challenges to the performers and allows our audience to get to know these singers in a way that is uniquely personal, and also quite different from their presentations on the Keller and Newmark stages.”

Alexander Elliott made his Portland Opera debut at the Big Night Concert in September, and will be singing the role of Count Almaviva in Tulsa Opera’s The Marriage of Figaro on October 18 and 20. Originally from Florence, South Carolina, Mr. Elliott has performed as an apprentice with Central City Opera and Des Moines Opera, where he covered the role of Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia and sang the roles of Frank in Ned Rorem’s Our Town,  Périchaud in La rondine and the Captain in Eugene Onegin, among others. Mr. Elliott has also performed with the Pensacola Symphony, Florence Symphony and Tallahassee Symphony. Last season, as a Studio Artist with Tulsa Opera, Mr. Elliott performed the Corporal in Donizetti’s La fille du régiment and the Postman in Frank Loesser’s The Most Happy Fella. Mr. Elliott is a graduate of Florida State University. This season at Portland Opera he will sing Man with a Shoe Sample Kit in Postcard From Morocco and Samuel in The Pirates of Penzance. He will also cover the role of Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor.

Established in 2005, the Portland Opera Resident Artist Program serves as a bridge from the conservatory world to the professional stage. These young artists are selected from an international pool of more than four hundred applicants to spend nine months in Portland, performing with Portland Opera and studying with leading professionals in the field. In addition to performing a solo recital, these singers make valuable contributions to the Portland arts community, performing at free library previews, giving free recitals, and singing leading roles in the annual opera at the Newmark Theatre. Past Resident Artists have also performed with such area arts groups as the Oregon Symphony, BodyVox, the Resonance Ensemble, Opera Theater Oregon, and Classical Revolution PDX.
