(Portland, Ore.) — Portland Opera's 49th Season kicks off with the annual Big Night Concert on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Keller Auditorium, 7:30pm.
Described by The Oregonian as a “lavish program of operatic greatest hits,” this one-night-only event is a benefit for Portland Opera’s Education and Outreach Programs, which reach nearly 20,000 young people every year, particularly through the Portland Opera To Go tour, which visits more than fifty schools and community centers in the Northwest. “This is a perfect evening for opera lovers and novices alike,” said Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano, “with arias and choruses by some of opera’s greatest composers, paired with lighter pieces from the golden age of American Musical Theater, all performed by world-class artists.” Guest artists KELLY CAE HOGAN and RIC FURMAN will make their Portland Opera debuts, sharing the stage with local artists HANNAH PENN and ANTON BELOV, and the 2013/14 Portland Opera Resident Artists who will be appearing for the first time in Portland. Portland Opera Music Director GEORGE MANAHAN conducts the “excellent” Portland Opera Orchestra (The New York Times) and the Opera’s “exquisite” chorus (Opera News).
KELLY CAE HOGAN, who has regularly appeared at the Metropolitan Opera as Gerhilde in Die Walküre, makes her Portland Opera debut singing “Dich, Teure Halle” from Wagner’s Tannhäuser. The German online magazine Opernnetz lauded her performance in Tannhäuser at Staatstheater Kassel, praising her “beautiful, full timbre, and crystal-clear top notes.” Ms. Hogan will also perform “Vissi d’arte,” from Puccini’s Tosca which has quickly become a signature aria for her and for which she has garnered such lavish praise as “powerful, beautiful and heart-rending” (Asbury Park Press).
Hailed as a “beautiful tenor” by Opera News, RIC FURMAN made an unscheduled Seattle Opera debut last season when he was called at the last minute to perform Florestan in Beethoven’s Fidelio, a role he had been covering. The Sun Break praised his “big voice of beautiful timbre” and Seen and Heard International found his performance “thoroughly compelling in his evocation first of utter despair and eventually of exultant joy.” Mr. Furman will perform two great tenor works: “Recitar!” from Pagliacci and perhaps the most beloved of all tenor arias, “Nessun Dorma” from Turandot.
Former Resident Artist and local mezzo soprano HANNAH PENN, most recently praised by The Oregonian for her “lustrous” Eustazio in Rinaldo, returns to the Keller Stage to sing the “Habanera” from Carmen, an aria that gave her career a big break. In 2007, Ms. Penn was a Resident Artist at Portland Opera, covering the title role in Carmen, when she was asked to step in for the previously scheduled mezzo soprano. After just a few hours of rehearsal, Ms. Penn went on to give a “richly sung and thoughtful portrayal” (Willamette Week). Ms. Penn has recently performed with the Oregon Symphony, BodyVox, Portland Baroque Orchestra, and Tacoma Opera. She currently teaches on the voice faculty at Portland State University.
Local baritone ANTON BELOV, last seen as the Jailer in Tosca will lend his “rich and mellifluous voice” (The New York Times) to “The Impossible Dream,” from Man of La Mancha, Mitch Leigh’s musical based on Cervantes’s novel Don Quixote. Mr. Belov has appeared with numerous companies and orchestras throughout the United States, including Boston Lyric Opera, Anchorage Opera, and Commonwealth Opera, among many others. Equally at home as a recitalist, Mr. Belov has performed recitals at the Kennedy Center, the New York Festival of Song at Carnegie Hall, and the 92nd Street Y in New York City.
THE PORTLAND OPERA RESIDENT ARTISTS soprano Nicole Haslett, mezzo soprano Melissa Fajardo, tenor Ian José Ramirez, and baritone Alexander Elliot will also be making their Portland Opera debuts at this Big Night Concert. These young singers are chosen from an international pool of more than four hundred applicants to spend the season at Portland Opera honing their craft. The Big Night Concert is the first chance for Portland Opera lovers to see these rising stars.
